[DAY 33] Long-distance swim and family life are not in the same boat

I took my bowl of porridge on deck this morning and enjoyed a calm breakfast, the winds were light with very little waves. I spotted what seemed to be a shoe floating up side down 20 meters from our starboard side. Yoav jumped in the water and brought back a sole. He looked closely to the white piece covered by a brown slush, Nike was written on its side.

Before getting ready for my swim I called home to talk to my son. He has had a hard time dealing with my absence. It is the second year in a row that I am away for months and missing two summers with my family. It is hard on everybody. He is at home during his summer break and he feels very lonely. I can’t wait to be back to my family life, those long periods of time at sea have put a lot of stress on my relationship with my children and wife. They have giving up a lot during those past two years.

With thoughts of my family in my mind I started getting ready for my swim day. It was going to be different today, Josh had decided to join me for the entire time. This was the first time that someone stayed with me for a full day, it didn’t happen last year either. We spent close to 7 hours in the water. During that time, Corbin and Heather collected 5 bottles and we swam by a small ghost net, fishing ropes, plastic fragments and an intact plastic bowl. Two albatrosses made a landing near us and entertained us during one of our feeding breaks. It was a nice change to have someone swimming beside me, I enjoyed it a lot but I don’t know if it was the same for Josh…
