Cross-Atlantic Swimmer, Ben Lecomte, Heads into Open Waters

Historic 3,400-mile Swim Begins July 16 @ 3:00 p.m.

WHAT:
Ben Lecomtešs historic Cross-Atlantic Swimming Challenge will begin Thursday, July 16 at approximately 3:00 p.m. He will walk into the Atlantic Ocean from the public beach at Kalmus in Hyannis, Mass. PUBLIC & MEDIA ARE INVITED TO SEE BEN OFF. Ben is swimming in memory of his deceased Dad and to help raise money for, and awareness of, cancer research. The world-at-large can make donations and keep tabs on Lecomte’s progress via daily updates to his website, www.swimatlantic.com.

He will be accompanied by a 12-meter (39 1/2 feet) sailboat, with two experienced sailors and cooks. His crew will also prepare the more than 8,000 calories Ben must eat each day to maintain strength during his 80+ day swim. Weather and currents permitting, Ben should arrive on the shores of Brest, France, on or about October 10, 1998.

DEPARTS:
Thursday, July 16, 1998 @ approximately 3:00 p.m. He will walk into the ocean from the public beach at Kalmus in Hyannis.

WHERE:
From the beach at Kalmus Ocean Street, Hyannis, Mass., further down from the Hyannis Yacht Club OR Limited camera crews may board one of the Hyannis Yacht Clubšs Launch Boats for filming from the water. This boat will also follow Ben while he hooks up with his pace boat and until they hit open water.

ALL CREWS MUST ARRIVE AT YACHT CLUB BY 2:30 p.m. TO BOARD LAUNCH BOAT. If using launch boat, short-term parking is available at The Captains Table, behind the Hyannis Yacht Club. Enter at the Town Way just before the Yachtsman Condominiums on your left, after the Veteranšs Beach entrance on Ocean Street in Hyannis. Please have press credentials to leave on dashboard of car.
